Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have publicly withdrawn their backing for the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, urging their colleagues to explore peaceful alternatives to the political crisis confronting the state.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II), made their appeal on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, saying recent interventions by respected leaders within and outside Rivers State informed their change of position.
“We are appealing for a withdrawal of these impeachment proceedings in the interest of peace and stability,” one of the lawmakers said, underscoring that dialogue and reconciliation should be prioritised over confrontation.
The development comes just 24 hours after two other legislators — Sylvanus Nwankwo, Minority Leader representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency — similarly withdrew support for the impeachment process, signalling a growing call within the Assembly to de-escalate the dispute.
Nwakoh and Amadi acknowledged that allegations of constitutional breaches by the governor and his deputy had been raised, but said continued impeachment action risked further destabilising the state’s governance. They cited ongoing appeals from community elders, political stakeholders, and constituents for restraint and dialogue.
With the latest shift, four of the 26 lawmakers who originally signed the impeachment notice have now distanced themselves from the move and endorsed a more amicable resolution to the impasse.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is scheduled to resume plenary on January 15, 2026, with expectations that further debate will centre on how best to resolve the leadership crisis without resorting to impeachment.
