President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader defined by strength of character and personal discipline.

Tinubu spoke at the official launch of the biography From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where he reflected on Buhari’s life, leadership and enduring influence on the nation’s political landscape.

In remarks acknowledging both the public and private dimensions of Buhari’s service, Tinubu said the true measure of leadership is not tied to office or ceremony but to the principles that endure after power fades.

“The measure of a leader is not simply the offices he held or the motorcades that accompanied him. It is what persists when the sirens fall silent,” he said, highlighting Buhari’s reputation for integrity, modest living and the belief that public office is a trust rather than a personal gain.

Tinubu recounted his shared political journey with Buhari, noting their collaboration in building the coalition that culminated in the 2015 election victory. He said the coalition formed before that poll had since evolved into one of Africa’s fastest-expanding political parties.

He praised the biography for offering a candid account of Buhari’s achievements and challenges, suggesting it should serve as a resource for future leaders rather than a collection of slogans.

The president also described Buhari as a patriot whose honesty and sense of duty were recognised even by critics, and he urged Nigerians to uphold honourable politics and results-oriented governance.

Tinubu’s tribute came in the presence of dignitaries, family members and political figures, with the biography launch marking a moment of reflection on Buhari’s legacy of service, discipline and commitment to national development.
