Tinubu Meets NLC Leaders Over Planned Nationwide Protest on Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday night held a meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress at the State House in Abuja in a bid to address a planned nationwide protest by the union over worsening insecurity ahead of its scheduled commencement on Wednesday.

Tinubu met the labour leaders as part of last-minute efforts to avert the demonstration, which the union had said was intended to highlight what it described as escalating security challenges across the country.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials including the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, as well as the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, reflecting the high level of engagement on the issue.

Representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress were led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who had earlier outlined labour’s intention to draw national attention to insecurity through the protest.

In statements prior to the meeting, Ajaero described the planned protest as a means to compel decisive government action on security, saying organised labour aimed to underscore the impact of insecurity on workers and investors and to call for a unified response from authorities.

The discussions at the State House focused on measures to address the union’s concerns and the broader context of public safety, with both sides indicating a willingness to continue dialogue.

No formal joint communiqué was issued at the conclusion of the talks, and officials said further consultations would take place to determine the way forward.
