Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi announced his decision on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, during an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State, where political allies and supporters gathered for the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Obi said the move signals the beginning of a new phase in his political engagement, as he and his colleagues seek to broaden their platform and mobilise support across the country.

“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” he said, framing the defection as part of a concerted effort to reshape Nigeria’s political trajectory. “We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027,” Obi added, reinforcing his commitment to electoral integrity and democratic processes as the nation prepares for the next presidential contest.

The formal defection to the ADC underscores a broader opposition coalition strategy that has been in focus in recent months, as various leaders seek to consolidate forces under a common platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.

David Mark, national chairman of the ADC, was among those present to welcome Obi at the event, reflecting the party’s role as a centre of opposition collaboration.

Obi’s decision drew attention from other political actors as well; Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who also competed under the Labour Party’s banner in 2023, confirmed that Obi had informed him of his intention to leave the LP, although he said he would remain in the party to help rebuild it.

The defection marks a notable shift in Nigeria’s opposition alignments and adds a prominent figure to the ADC’s ranks as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 elections.
