Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has died after collapsing at his office in the Government House in Yenagoa on Thursday, prompting an outpouring of grief from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and political leaders.
Ewhrudjakpo reportedly slumped around 1:30 pm while attending to official duties and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, where he was later pronounced dead at the age of 60.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that emergency response teams acted swiftly to transfer him to the hospital, but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
The PDP confirmed the death of Ewhrudjakpo in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Comrade Ini Ememobong, saying the news was received “with deep shock” and describing the passing as a profound loss for the party and the state.
The party’s National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, conveyed its condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State and prayed for eternal rest for the late deputy governor.
Ememobong said Ewhrudjakpo was a trusted and faithful party man whose commitment to principle and integrity marked his public service.
At the time of reporting, the Bayelsa State Government had not issued an official statement regarding Ewhrudjakpo’s death.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo had served as Bayelsa Deputy Governor under Governor Douye Diri since 2020, having previously represented Bayelsa West in the Senate and held leadership roles within the party.
The PDP’s statement noted that his dedication to political principle and service had earned him respect across the party’s ranks.
