The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved ₦100 billion for the rehabilitation of police and other security agencies’ training institutions across Nigeria. The decision was taken at the Council’s 154th virtual meeting, where officials also sanctioned ₦2.6 billion for consultancy services to support the planning and execution of the rehabilitation projects.
The funding followed a nationwide assessment carried out by an ad-hoc committee chaired by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, which reported that many security-training institutions were in poor condition and urgently needed upgrades.
The committee highlighted significant infrastructural deficiencies, outdated facilities, and inadequate training resources, noting that these limitations had hindered effective personnel training and capacity development.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who presided over the meeting, emphasized the need for national reforms to translate into visible benefits for citizens.
He urged state governments to ensure that governance initiatives produce tangible outcomes, stating, “Our task is not to admire problems, but to solve them. Not to explain challenges, but to overcome them.”
Officials confirmed that the rehabilitation programme is aimed at strengthening the infrastructure and improving training standards for security personnel nationwide.
The approval is subject to final ratification by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after which implementation will commence.
The initiative represents a critical step in addressing longstanding infrastructural challenges within Nigeria’s security-training institutions and enhancing the operational readiness of personnel across the country.
