Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed Peter Obi into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a major boost to opposition coalition politics in Nigeria.
Atiku, in a statement posted on his official X handle on Wednesday, reacted shortly after Obi’s formal defection to the ADC in Enugu, the Southeast capital, where the former Anambra State governor publicly announced his new political platform.
Welcoming Obi, Atiku said the development marked “a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country,” noting that Obi’s entry into the ADC strengthens the push for a united and credible opposition.
He described Obi as “my brother and associate,” adding that he was pleased to officially receive him into the party.
He expressed optimism about future collaboration, saying he looked forward to “a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people.”
Atiku also framed the moment symbolically, stating that “as the ADC Coalition train leaves Enugu, the capital of the Southeast region, I hope this inspires other patriots to join the cause with the train headed in their direction.”
Peter Obi’s defection to the ADC was earlier announced in Enugu, where he officially joined the party and outlined his political direction going forward.
In his declaration, Obi said he was joining the ADC to “begin a rescue journey,” signalling his intention to work within the coalition framework ahead of the 2026 political cycle.
The move has been widely interpreted as a strategic step aimed at consolidating opposition forces, with Atiku’s welcome message reinforcing expectations of deeper cooperation within the ADC-led coalition as preparations intensify for future national contests.
