Rivers Speaker, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule, has accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of actions he says are pushing the state toward a fresh political crisis.

Amaewhule spoke to reporters in Port Harcourt on Thursday alongside several lawmakers, responding to comments made by the governor earlier in the week.

He stated, “The governor’s recent conduct and public statements have created unnecessary tension between the executive and legislative arms, and if not checked, this could destabilize governance in Rivers State.”

The allegations from the Speaker came after Governor Fubara dismissed claims of rifts with members of the state legislature and said efforts were being made to convene meetings with key political figures, including the Federal Capital Territory Minister.

Amaewhule countered those assertions, saying the governor had failed to engage effectively with lawmakers and that his narrative did not reflect the Assembly’s position. He added “Certain statements made by the governor are unwarranted and misrepresent the position of the Assembly. We remain committed to the people and to maintaining the constitutional balance between the branches of government.”

In his briefing, Amaewhule said the governor had not sought the legislature’s approval on key matters and accused him of disparaging members of the Assembly, asserting that such actions undermined the process of collaborative governance.
