Aston Villa manager Unai Emery explained his handling of Jadon Sancho’s playing time as the Manchester United loanee continues to adapt to life at Villa Park.
Sancho, who joined Villa on a season-long loan from Manchester United after limited opportunities at his parent club, has yet to establish himself as a regular starter in the Premier League this season.
Emery said after Villa’s 1-0 win over Manchester City that his decision to substitute Sancho was based on fitness considerations and managing the player’s workload, noting that Sancho had played “very good minutes” earlier in the week but that the planned minutes were judged to be enough for the match, reflecting a tactical choice rather than a judgment on the player’s ability.
Emery added that Villa remain committed to helping Sancho regain top performance levels and unlock his potential over the second half of the campaign.
Sancho’s loan move was influenced by Emery’s belief in his abilities, with Sancho telling club media that the manager gave him confidence and a clear plan that persuaded him to join Villa.
The winger’s adaptation continues as he seeks consistent playing time and impact in both domestic and European competitions.
