Southampton have secured a place in the FA Cup semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Arsenal at St Mary’s Stadium tonight.
In one of the most significant upsets of the 2025/26 campaign, substitute Shea Charles struck an 85th-minute winner to knock out the Premier League leaders, ending Mikel Arteta’s pursuit of a domestic treble and condemning the Gunners to their second cup exit in just 14 days.
The quarter-final clash began with Arsenal asserting territorial dominance, but the Championship side—currently on a 14-game unbeaten run—remained disciplined in a deep defensive block.
The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute when a rare lapse in the Arsenal backline allowed Ross Stewart to capitalize on an error by Ben White.
The Scottish forward clinicaly powered his effort past Kepa Arrizabalaga to send the home support into a frenzy and ensure the Saints entered the interval with a slender lead.
Mikel Arteta responded with a triple substitution on the hour mark, introducing Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke, and Riccardo Calafiori to inject offensive urgency.
The tactical shift paid immediate dividends in the 68th minute when Gyökeres, continuing his prolific form, poked home a low cross from Kai Havertz to level the score.
However, as the match appeared destined for extra time, Southampton struck on the transition.
In the 85th minute, Northern Ireland international Shea Charles found space on the edge of the area and placed a precise finish into the bottom corner to secure a historic result for Russell Martin’s side.
The defeat marks a significant regression for Arsenal, who just two weeks ago suffered a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.
While they remain nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, the loss of two potential trophies in quick succession has placed immense pressure on the remaining seven fixtures of their season.
For Southampton, the victory represents a return to the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2021 and solidifies their status as the "giant-killers" of the current edition.
Southampton will now await the semi-final draw, where they could face the likes of Manchester City or Chelsea, while Arsenal must quickly regroup for their return to league action.
