Record Breaker: Guardiola Becomes League Cup’s Most Decorated Manager

Pep Guardiola has officially become the most successful manager in the history of the League Cup after guiding Manchester City to a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the 2026 final.

The Catalan tactician has now secured the trophy five times during his ten-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium, surpassing the previous record of four titles held jointly by Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough, and José Mourinho.

The record-breaking achievement was cemented during a clinical second-half display at Wembley, where 21-year-old academy graduate Nico O’Reilly scored twice to secure City’s ninth League Cup title overall.

Guardiola’s previous successes in the competition came in four consecutive seasons between 2018 and 2021, and this latest triumph marks his 19th major trophy since arriving in English football in 2016.

Under his leadership, Manchester City have now won the competition in 50% of the seasons he has managed, maintaining a win rate in League Cup finals of 100%.

The victory carries significant weight for Guardiola’s legacy, particularly as it comes during a season where the club has faced challenges in other knockout competitions.

By securing his fifth League Cup, Guardiola has now won 38 major trophies across his managerial career with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.

This latest piece of silverware also serves as a vital psychological boost for the squad as they head into the international break trailing Arsenal by nine points in the Premier League, with a game in hand and an FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on the horizon.

Manchester City now stand alone with nine League Cup titles, just one behind Liverpool’s record of ten.

For Guardiola, the milestone reinforces his status as the defining tactical mind of the modern era, having dominated a competition that many elite managers use as a springboard for further success.

The club will now look to carry this momentum into April as they continue their pursuit of a domestic double.
