Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has delivered a blunt assessment of the Peoples Democratic Party, saying the party has failed to adjust to life outside power and is now facing an existential crisis.

He made the remarks during an interview on This Morning Show on Arise News, where he reflected on the state of opposition politics in Nigeria and questioned the PDP’s capacity to function effectively without federal control.

Speaking on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed said the party never prepared itself for the reality of being in opposition after losing power in 2015, arguing that this failure has continued to weaken it both internally and in the public space.

According to him, “PDP never prepared for opposition,” as the party operated for years with a mindset of permanent incumbency and lacked the structures required for rebuilding once power was lost.

He expressed deep pessimism about the party’s future, describing its present condition as a profound loss of national political legacy.

“To be honest, I’m sorry to say this because I think this is the loss of national legacy. I think PDP is gone. I can’t see how anybody can fix PDP,” Baba-Ahmed said.

The former presidential aide attributed the party’s decline to prolonged internal conflicts, weak ideological direction and the absence of a clear reform agenda, factors he said have steadily eroded the PDP’s relevance as a credible opposition force.

He warned that without a fundamental reset and a clear commitment to internal reform, the party would continue to decline and struggle to regain public trust.
