Brighton & Hove Albion secured a 2–1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, knocking United out of the Emirates FA Cup third round and advancing to the fourth round of the competition.

Brighton took the lead in the first half through Brajan Gruda, who finished a well-taken move to give the visitors an early advantage. Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck doubled the lead before the break with a powerful finish, making it 2–0 at the interval.

United responded in the second half when Benjamin Sesko headed in from a Bruno Fernandes corner, reducing the deficit and offering hope of a comeback.

However, United’s efforts were hampered late on when young substitute Shea Lacey was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for dissent, effectively limiting United’s attacking opportunities in the closing stages.

Brighton defended resolutely to see out the result, marking their first FA Cup victory over Manchester United and progressing to the next round.

United’s elimination at this stage adds to a challenging spell for the club under interim manager Darren Fletcher, following recent inconsistent league and cup performances.

The defeat ends Manchester United’s bid for FA Cup silverware in the third round, an earlier exit than the club’s historical norm in the competition. It also contributes to mounting pressure on United’s short-term leadership, with uncertainties around the managerial position and the squad’s direction.

Brighton’s victory represents a notable cup result and underlines their competitive progress under their current coaching structure.
