Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has faulted President Bola Tinubu over what he described as a widening gap between campaign promises and the reality of governance, citing persistent power failures and repeated national grid collapses barely halfway into the administration’s first term.
In a statement shared on Wednesday via his X handle, Obi noted that the national grid has collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, with the month yet to end, adding that the grid reportedly failed about 12 times in 2025. He said the trend sharply contradicts the President’s pre-election promise and raises serious governance concerns.
Quoting the President’s earlier vow, Obi wrote: “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.” He argued that the recurring grid failures undermine public confidence and demand urgent attention.
Obi also contrasted Nigeria’s power output with that of Turkey, where the President was reported to be on an official visit.
He observed that Turkey, with a population of about 87 million, generates and distributes over 120,000 megawattsof electricity, while Nigeria continues to struggle with less than 5% of that capacity, describing the gap as “striking and painful.”
Calling for greater focus at home, Obi urged the President to “stay at home and confront the nation’s problems,”warning against what he described as a growing disconnect between leadership priorities and citizens’ daily hardships.
He further cautioned against premature political calculations, saying national attention should be on governance outcomes rather than election cycles.
“We should be joining hands to demand accountability and responsible leadership,” Obi said, adding that Nigerians must be spared the “indignity and suffering caused by persistent bad governance.”
