Man Utd Reach Agreement To Appoint Michael Carrick As Interim Manager

Manchester United have reached an agreement with former midfielder Michael Carrick to become the club’s interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025–26 season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer missing out on the role.

According to The Athletic, Carrick’s return to Old Trafford will see him take charge of the first team on a temporary basis following the departure of Rúben Amorim earlier this month.

United are finalising contract details with the 44-year-old and aim to have him in position ahead of the upcoming Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford.

The agreement in principle is understood to include provisions for Carrick’s choice of coaching staff, allowing him to build a backroom team to support preparations for the remainder of the campaign.

Carrick, who previously spent a short period as United’s caretaker manager in 2021, emerged ahead of other candidates including former United boss Solskjaer — who had also held talks with the club — in the recruitment process.

The appointment comes as United seek stability after a period of managerial change that included interim caretaker duties from Darren Fletcher. United’s next competitive fixture is the Manchester derby, scheduled for this weekend.
