The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the Christmas Eve explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, describing the incident as further evidence of what it called the Federal Government’s failure to protect citizens amid worsening insecurity across the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on behalf of the party, the PDP said the blast was “another sad reminder of the rising insecurity that has become the unfortunate contemporary reality that Nigerians face,” stressing that protecting lives and property remains the most basic obligation of government.
The party said the incident was unacceptable and urged authorities to respond with decisive action rather than “rhetoric and playing politics with security.”
The opposition party expressed condolences to families affected by the attack, noting that “no one should lose their life while worshipping God,” and warned that continued assaults on places of worship could undermine constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion.
According to the statement, allowing such attacks to persist unchecked risks creating “an atmosphere of fear that threatens the very fabric of our religious society.”
The PDP called on both federal and state governments to urgently strengthen security measures, particularly during the festive period, arguing that Nigerians deserve more than assurances.
“We need concrete, actionable security strategies deployed on the ground,” the party said, adding that the current situation had become “unbearable” and required immediate and serious intervention.
