Liverpool face a decisive second leg at Anfield after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at RAMS Park.
On a night that marked Arne Slot’s 100th match in charge of the Merseyside club, a clinical early strike from Mario Lemina proved the difference, condemning the Reds to a frustrating evening in a hostile atmosphere that has frequently troubled them this season.
The contest was settled in the seventh minute when Victor Osimhen rose highest to meet a left-wing corner, flicking the ball into the path of Mario Lemina, who converted from close range to ignite the Istanbul crowd.
Despite the early setback, Liverpool grew into the game, with Florian Wirtz squandering two clear opportunities to level before the interval.
The visitors' tactical approach was hampered by a series of uncharacteristic defensive errors, particularly from Ibrahima Konate, who struggled to contain the physical presence of Osimhen throughout the 90 minutes.
The second half was dominated by VAR drama as both sides saw major decisions overturned. Victor Osimhen appeared to have doubled the hosts' lead on the hour mark after a defensive lapse by Konate, only for the strike to be ruled out for offside.
Ten minutes later, Liverpool believed they had secured a vital away goal when Virgil van Dijk turned the ball home during a goalmouth scramble, but the celebrations were cut short after a lengthy review deemed Konate to have handled the ball in the build-up.
The result continues a worrying trend for Liverpool in Turkey, where they have now failed to win in open play across six competitive visits.
The defeat marks Arne Slot's 22nd loss in his first 100 games, a milestone that saw him fall just short of breaking Sir Kenny Dalglish’s club record for wins in a century of fixtures.
Liverpool must now pivot quickly to domestic duties as they host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.
The focus will then return to the European stage for the return leg at Anfield next Wednesday, where the Reds will need to summon the spirit of past continental comebacks to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
For Galatasaray, the victory provides a massive psychological edge as they seek their first quarter-final appearance since 2014.
