Late Heartbreak: Osula Stunner Ends Carrick’s Unbeaten Man Utd Start

Newcastle United produced a display of immense defensive resilience at St James’ Park tonight, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester United despite playing half the match with ten men.

A 90th-minute solo wonder-goal from substitute William Osula settled a fractious encounter, handing Michael Carrick his first defeat since taking charge as interim manager and halting his record-equalling nine-game unbeaten Premier League run.

The match ignited in a chaotic conclusion to the first half. In the 45th minute, Newcastle were reduced to ten men after Jacob Ramsey was shown a second yellow card for simulation inside the penalty area.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Magpies took the lead in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Anthony Gordon converted a penalty after being fouled by Bruno Fernandes.

However, the visitors struck back almost immediately before the interval, as Casemiro rose to power home a header from a Fernandes free-kick in the 49th minute of a marathon first half.

The second period was defined by Manchester United’s sustained pressure against a retreating Newcastle block. Aaron Ramsdale was forced into a series of exceptional saves, notably tipping a Joshua Zirkzee effort onto the woodwork and clawing away a Leny Yoro header from point-blank range.

As Michael Carrick introduced offensive reinforcements to break the deadlock, Newcastle remained disciplined, absorbing waves of attacks while looking for a solitary opening on the counter-attack.

That opportunity arrived in the final minute of regulation time. Collecting a long pass from Kieran Trippier on the right flank, William Osula beat Tyrell Malacia before cutting infield and curling a stunning strike past Senne Lammens into the far corner.

The goal sparked scenes of pandemonium at St James’ Park, as Eddie Howe’s side successfully navigated eight minutes of added time to secure three vital points in their push for European qualification.

The result has major implications for the top-four race, as Manchester United miss the chance to solidify their grip on third place. For Carrick, the defeat ends a period of tactical stability that had seen him win seven of his previous nine league matches.

Newcastle move back into the European conversation, buoyed by a victory that ends a difficult run of home form.
