Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year during their 2-0 La Liga win against Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu, marking a significant milestone in the French striker’s first full calendar year with the club.
Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a header, and Mbappé converted an 86th-minute penalty to secure his 59th goal of 2025, matching the record Ronaldo set in 2013. Real Madrid’s victory kept them close to the top of the La Liga table, one point behind leaders Barcelona.
The tally includes goals across all competitions in 2025, with Mbappé also leading his team’s scoring charts this season in La Liga.
After finding the net, Mbappé celebrated with the iconic “SIUUU” gesture made famous by Ronaldo, acknowledging the achievement and paying tribute to the Portuguese forward’s legacy at the club.
In a post-match interview with club media, Mbappé said the day held additional personal meaning as it coincided with his 27th birthday and reflected on equalling the record of a player he has long admired.
He said, “This is for him. I usually have my own, but I wanted to share this with him. He was my childhood idol, and I have a very good relationship with him; he’s a friend now. I send my best wishes to Cristiano and all Real Madrid fans. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
He added, “The record is incredible. It’s my first year doing something like Cristiano, my idol, the best player in Real Madrid’s history and a global football icon. It’s an honor for me.”
The milestone underscores Mbappé’s scoring consistency throughout the season and places him alongside one of the club’s most prolific scorers in history.
Real Madrid now prepare for their next fixture, aiming to maintain momentum as they pursue domestic and continental objectives.
