Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has confirmed the release of the 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in the Danko-Wasagu area of the state. Speaking to journalists, the governor emphasized that no ransom was paid by either the state or the Federal Government to secure their freedom.

According to him, the rescue followed “non-kinetic operations” carried out by security agencies, a strategy also confirmed by officials who coordinated the mission. Governor Idris stated: “The Kebbi State Government did not pay a kobo, and neither did the Federal Government. Their release was achieved through the strong commitment of our security forces.”

The schoolgirls, who were abducted on November 17 during an attack that also claimed the life of the school’s vice principal, were safely recovered and taken into custody for medical checks. Sources confirmed that the girls are in stable condition and undergoing debriefing before being reunited with their parents.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also confirmed the release through a statement issued by his media adviser, commending the collaboration among the military, police, DSS, NSCDC, and local operatives. He noted that the rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of intensified pressure on criminal gangs.

Governor Idris praised the efforts of security personnel and thanked the President for what he described as “swift directives that aided the success of the mission.” He assured residents that the state government is strengthening surveillance around vulnerable schools to prevent future attacks.

With the return of the rescued girls, authorities say the focus now is on rehabilitation, security reinforcement, and continued pursuit of criminal elements operating within forested regions of the northwest.
