Actress Ini Edo broke down in tears during an Instagram Live session as she addressed the backlash from the Christian Association of Nigeria over the title of her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas.
She acknowledged the controversy and expressed deep regret, saying, “If I had known the title ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ would cause a problem, I would have changed it. CAN, I am sorry. I never meant to insult or disgrace Christians. I am a Christian too. I put my sweat, my blood into this movie. We promoted the movie for such a long time. If at any point anybody had said anything, we wouldn’t have gone on with it. We’re all Christians in the team. We prayed and reverenced God.”
Ini Edo urged CAN and members of the public to watch the film before passing judgment, emphasizing that the content should be considered independently of the title.
She said, “Please watch the movie first. If after viewing it, it is found to be offensive, I am fully willing to take it down.”
Her emotional response reflects the tension between creative freedom and cultural sensitivity within the Nigerian film industry, highlighting the challenges artists face when addressing potentially controversial themes while engaging a diverse audience.
