Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has denied that he recently declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general election, saying reports suggesting otherwise misrepresented his comments.
Baba-Ahmed spoke on Channels Television on Friday, explaining that what he said had been widely misunderstood amid early positioning ahead of the next elections and ongoing discussions within opposition circles.
“I never declared to contest the presidency two days ago,” he said, stressing that he had not formally entered the race despite media and social media claims to the contrary.
Emphasising his loyalty to the Labour Party, Baba-Ahmed clarified that his recent remarks were intended to reaffirm his membership in the party rather than announce a campaign launch.
“Two days ago, what I did was simply say that I remain in the Labour Party. I never declared to contest the presidency, even though there could be a possibility of that happening. I certainly did not declare for the presidency,” he stated, noting that any formal expression of interest would depend on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable and his party’s internal processes.
