Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State yesterday formally announced his defection from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC) at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
He described the move as a necessary step to align his administration with what he called “full support” for the federal government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “We can’t support Mr President if we don’t fully identify with him; not backyard support,” Fubara said, adding that “our decision this evening is that we are moving to APC.”
The defection follows the earlier switch by 17 lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the House Speaker, to the APC, a move that had already begun shifting the political balance in the state legislature.
In announcing his defection, Fubara said the decision was taken after careful consideration of the need for stable governance, insisting that the internal conflicts within the PDP had hindered effective administration in Rivers State.
He also suggested that the move was a response to assurances of cooperation and support from the federal government, which he believes will facilitate the completion of pending projects and improve service delivery.
With the formal switch completed, all eyes are now on how APC in Rivers will reorganise its party structure and whether Fubara’s decision will trigger additional realignments among state lawmakers, local government officials, and grassroots party networks.
