Interim Manchester United head coach Darren Fletcher has revealed that he consulted former manager Sir Alex Ferguson before accepting the role following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday.
Fletcher, 41, is set to take charge of Wednesday’s Premier League away match against Burnley and could also remain in charge for Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Speaking to reporters, Fletcher said he felt it was important to seek Ferguson’s approval before stepping into the role.
“I don't like to make any major decisions without speaking to Sir Alex,” Fletcher said.
“I've got a really good relationship with Sir Alex, so I wanted to speak to him first and ultimately to get his blessing, to be perfectly honest with you. I think he deserves that respect. I wanted to run it by him and he echoed my thoughts.”
Fletcher enjoyed the majority of his playing career under Ferguson, making 342 appearances in all competitions for the club. He has also previously served as coach of United’s under-18 side.
Reflecting on his responsibility during the transition period, Fletcher added, “When you're an employee of the club, it's your job to do your best for Manchester United,” he said.
Fletcher becomes the 11th Manchester United manager, either interim or permanent, since Ferguson retired in 2013. Ferguson remains the club’s most successful manager, having won 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies.
United are currently sixth in the Premier League, with 31 points from 20 matches.
