First Win at Camp Nou: Simeone Breaks Record as Atlético Take Control

Atlético Madrid have taken a significant step toward the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals following a 2-0 victory over ten-man Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth secured a disciplined win for Diego Simeone’s side, marking the manager’s first-ever career victory at the Catalan stadium and ending Barcelona’s 39-match home scoring streak.

The tactical balance of the quarter-final first leg shifted decisively in the 44th minute.

Following a rapid counter-attack, Giuliano Simeone was brought down by Pau Cubarsí on the edge of the penalty area. Initially sanctioned with a yellow card, referee Istvan Kovacs upgraded the punishment to a straight red following a VAR review for the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO).

From the resulting free-kick in the 45th minute, Julián Álvarez clinically curled a strike past Joan García to give the visitors a lead going into the interval.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Hansi Flick’s side maintained significant territorial pressure in the second half, with Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford—currently on loan from Manchester United—creating several openings.

Rashford struck the crossbar with a deflected free-kick in the 53rd minute, but Barcelona’s inability to convert 56% possession and 21 attempts into goals eventually proved costly.

In the 70th minute, second-half substitute Alexander Sørloth doubled Atlético’s advantage, clinically tapping home a near-post cross from Matteo Ruggeri to silence the home crowd.

The 2-0 result places Atlético Madrid in a formidable position ahead of the return leg at the Metropolitano next Tuesday.

For Barcelona, the defeat necessitates a historic comeback if they are to reach the semi-finals for a second consecutive season.

The club must now also navigate the suspension of Cubarsí for the second leg, further straining a defensive unit that struggled to contain Atlético’s efficiency on the transition.
