Manchester United are set to bring former defender Jonny Evans back into the first-team environment as an assistant to interim head coach Darren Fletcher, following the departure of Ruben Amorim on Monday.
Evans, who retired from professional football last summer, had been serving as the club’s head of loans and pathways before leaving that role last month.
The 38-year-old is now expected to support Fletcher as United prepare for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge and is expected to remain in the role until a caretaker manager is appointed. The club plans to name Amorim’s permanent successor in the summer.
United face a demanding run of fixtures, beginning with the trip to Burnley, followed by an FA Cup tie at home to Brighton on Sunday, and a Manchester derby against City on 17 January.
Evans and Fletcher spent nine years together at Old Trafford as players before both joined West Bromwich Albion after leaving United in 2015.
A graduate of United’s academy, Evans made 241 appearances for the club and was part of squads that won three Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Beyond his time at United, Evans also played in the Premier League for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City, and had two loan spells with Sunderland.
