Manchester City’s grip on the Premier League title race loosened significantly tonight as they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.
The result, coupled with Arsenal’s clinical 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, sees the Gunners surge seven points clear at the summit of the table, placing the defending champions under immense pressure heading into the final stretch of the season.
The contest began with characteristic City dominance as Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring in the 31st minute, volleying home a precise cross from Rayan Cherki to settle the home crowd.
However, Vitor Pereira’s side refused to be cowed by the champions' pedigree and fought back early in the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White stunned the Etihad in the 56th minute with a clever backheel finish that beat Gianluigi Donnarumma at the near post, capitalizing on a rare moment of defensive hesitation from the hosts.
City appeared to have restored order just six minutes later when Rodri rose highest to head home from a corner, reclaiming the lead and seemingly setting the stage for a routine finish.
Yet, Forest produced the night’s definitive moment in the 76th minute; Elliot Anderson found space on the edge of the area and guided a brilliant strike into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations in the away end.
Despite a frantic late onslaught, City were unable to find a third, leaving Pep Guardiola visibly frustrated on the touchline as the final whistle confirmed a significant setback.
