Manchester United secured a 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, with Patrick Dorgu’s first-half volley proving decisive in a match played without several regular starters including captain Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, both sidelined with injury.
Dorgu opened the scoring in the 24th minute when he connected with a long throw-in and struck a first-time volley into the bottom corner, his first goal for Manchester United and the only goal of the game.
The victory lifted United into the top five of the Premier League standings and ended a recent run without a home win.
United held out under sustained pressure in the second half from Newcastle, who dominated possession but were unable to convert their chances, including an effort from Lewis Hall that hit the crossbar.
Despite Newcastle’s 66 percent possession in the latter stages, Manchester United preserved a clean sheet to secure all three points.
The match was notable for the absence of Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, both unavailable due to injuries confirmed earlier in the week, with manager Ruben Amorim indicating that neither player was fit enough for selection going into the game.
Dorgu’s performance in an unfamiliar role on the right flank drew attention, with observers praising the quality of his volley and contribution to United’s attacking play.
The result provides Manchester United with momentum as they continue to navigate a congested fixture list with a depleted squad.
