Aisha Buhari and Her Late Husband, Muhammadu Buhari

Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has stated that her late husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, briefly accepted a rumour circulating within the Presidential Villa that she had intended to harm him, an account she shared in the context of the recent launch of a book documenting his legacy.

The biography, titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari and written by Dr. Charles Omole, was unveiled at the State House in Abuja and chronicles the late president’s life from his early years to his final days.

In her contribution to the book, Aisha Buhari recounted that the former president “believed the Aso Rock gossip that I was planning to kill him” and that this belief led him to begin locking his room, a reaction she said was driven by the internal rumours rather than verified information.

She explained that the rumour did not come from political opponents but emerged from within the corridors of power.

Aisha Buhari also denied suggestions that there was a covert plot to poison the former president, asserting that the health crisis that led to Buhari taking extended medical leave in 2017 stemmed from disruptions to his established feeding and nutrition regimen rather than any external interference.

Her account, as presented in the book, noted that the disruption to his regular routines extended to delays in meals and supplements she had personally overseen for his health, which she argued was misinterpreted by insiders as evidence of malicious intent.

Aisha’s reflections during the book launch highlighted the influence that internal palace politics and unverified speculation can exert on leadership and personal relationships within the presidency.
