Atlético Madrid have secured their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years despite a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano tonight.
Diego Simeone’s side progress with a 3-2 aggregate victory, successfully defending the two-goal cushion established in the first leg at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The result marks a significant tactical achievement for the Madrid club, as they successfully neutralized a spirited Barcelona comeback to end the Catalan side’s European campaign.
The quarter-final second leg began with an aggressive offensive display from Barcelona, who leveled the aggregate score within the opening 25 minutes.
Lamine Yamal clinicaly finished in the 4th minute to ignite hopes of a historic turnaround, before Ferran Torres doubled the visitors' lead on the night with a precise strike.
However, the momentum shifted decisively late in the first half when Ademola Lookman clinicaly converted a rapid counter-attack in the 34th minute.
The Nigerian international’s goal restored Atlético’s aggregate advantage and forced Barcelona to pursue a third goal that never arrived.
The second period was defined by defensive organization and disciplinary setbacks for Hansi Flick’s side.
In the 80th minute, Barcelona were reduced to ten men for the second time in the tie after Eric García was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a professional foul on Alexander Sørloth.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Barcelona maintained significant pressure through Robert Lewandowski and substitute Marcus Rashford, but Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso produced several vital saves in stoppage time to ensure the hosts avoided further damage and secured their progression.
The 3-2 aggregate victory sets up a semi-final encounter for Atlético Madrid against the winner of tomorrow’s quarter-final between Arsenal and Sporting CP, with the Premier League side currently holding a 1-0 advantage.
For Barcelona, the exit focuses their remaining seasonal objectives entirely on domestic competition, as they aim to maintain their lead at the summit of La Liga.
