Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has paid tribute to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, commending their courage, sacrifice and dedication to national unity and security.
In a message posted on his verified X handle on Thursday to mark Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, Atiku said he and his family joined “millions of Nigerians in solemn remembrance and deep gratitude to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.”
The day is dedicated to honouring military personnel who lost their lives in the World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions and internal security operations, as well as those currently serving across the country.
“Today, my family and I join millions of Nigerians in solemn remembrance and deep gratitude to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces,” Atiku wrote, acknowledging not only those who have died but also active personnel defending the nation.
In his message, he honoured troops “who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of our nation,” and “salute[d] those who continue to serve with courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the safety and unity of our country.”
Atiku also expressed appreciation to retired military personnel, highlighting that their endurance and patriotism serve as a constant reminder of the cost of freedom and the resilience required to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is marked across the country with wreath-laying ceremonies, parades and the sounding of the Last Post as Nigerians honour both fallen heroes and serving troops.
