Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have secured an historic all-English UEFA Europa League semi-final following successful quarter-final second-leg results tonight.

In a battle between two former European champions, Unai Emery’s side emphatically dismantled Bologna 4-0 at Villa Park to progress 7-1 on aggregate, while Nottingham Forest navigated a tense encounter at the City Ground to overcome FC Porto 1-0 and secure a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Aston Villa’s progression was defined by a clinical offensive display that effectively ended the tie within the first half-hour.

Following a 3-1 first-leg victory in Italy, the Villans took the lead in the 16th minute when Ollie Watkins converted a Morgan Rogers cross to record his 100th goal for the club.

Despite Rogers seeing a subsequent penalty saved, Emi Buendía doubled the advantage on the night before Rogers clinicaly added a third shortly before the interval.

Ezri Konsa finalized the 7-1 aggregate rout in the 89th minute, marking Villa’s third major European semi-final appearance—two of which have occurred under Emery’s three-season tenure.

In the East Midlands, Nottingham Forest secured their place in the final four with a disciplined performance against ten-man Porto.

The tactical dynamic of the match shifted in the 7th minute when Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red card for a professional foul, leaving the visitors to play over 80 minutes at a numerical disadvantage.

Forest capitalized on the opening in the 22nd minute through Morgan Gibbs-White, whose deflected strike from outside the area proved to be the decisive goal of the tie.

Despite Porto striking the woodwork twice in the second half through Alan Varela and Taty Castellanos, Pereira’s side maintained their 2-1 aggregate lead to book their first European semi-final in 46 years.

The confirmation of an all-English semi-final ensures a Premier League representative will feature in the final in Istanbul on May 20.

The result also carries significant weight for the UEFA coefficient race, virtually securing five Champions League qualification spots for English clubs next season.

The first leg is scheduled to take place at the City Ground on Thursday, April 30, with the return fixture at Villa Park one week later on May 7.
