Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, concluding a 15-year career with the Super Eagles.

The 33-year-old confirmed his decision in a social media post, citing careful reflection and his desire to step away from the national team. Musa began his international career at 17 and went on to earn 111 caps, becoming Nigeria’s most capped player.

In his statement, Musa highlighted key moments in his career, saying, “From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me. I was just a young boy when the journey started. Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about.”

He reflected on his achievements, including winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and scoring four goals in FIFA World Cup tournaments, noting, “Scoring at the World Cup, against Argentina and Iceland, are memories I will always carry with me. To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goal scorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for.”

Musa also spoke about leadership and mentorship, stating, “Being captain of the Super Eagles was another important part of my journey. Wearing the armband taught me a lot, about responsibility, patience, and putting others first. Even during difficult times and criticism, my commitment to Nigeria never changed.”

He concluded by expressing gratitude to teammates, coaches, administrators, and fans, writing, “Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning. To the fans at home and abroad, your support meant more to me than you know. As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. I know the Super Eagles will continue to move forward. And I know that this bond will never be broken. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”

Musa’s retirement follows the recent exit of former stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong, and marks the end of a distinguished period in Nigerian football characterized by international appearances, leadership, and significant contributions on the continental and world stage.
