Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has officially emerged as the governorship candidate of Accord Party for the 2026 elections following the party’s primary held on Wednesday in Osogbo.
The exercise was conducted after a thorough screening process earlier in the day, during which Adeleke was cleared by the party’s national screening committee to contest under the Accord banner.
The screening committee, chaired by Ibe Thankgod, confirmed that Adeleke met all the requirements for nomination and presented him with a Certificate of Clearance, formally enabling him to contest. “Governor Adeleke is a worthy gubernatorial aspirant and has satisfied all the conditions laid down by the party,” Thankgod said, announcing the outcome to the accredited delegates.
The primary was attended by 150 delegates, representing the 30 local government areas of Osun State, with each area sending five delegates.
Party officials, including national leaders of Accord Party, as well as Governor Adeleke, his deputy, and senior state government appointees, were present to oversee and validate the process. Security personnel, including the police and the Department of State Services, maintained order throughout the event.
Governor Adeleke, upon receiving the clearance, expressed readiness to lead the party into the 2026 general elections, stating with assurance: “I am ready for the primary, and I am ready for the general elections. We are winning by God’s grace.”
His emergence under Accord Party follows his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a move he said was motivated by a desire to align with a platform that supports his administration’s welfare-oriented agenda.
With the primary concluded and Adeleke as flagbearer, focus now shifts to how Accord Party will structure its campaign machinery across Osun State, how PDP will respond to the loss of a sitting governor from its fold, and how voters will react in the forthcoming 2026 polls.
