The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has formally tendered his resignation from the Federal Executive Council (FEC), effective April 30, 2026.
In an official communication received by the Presidency on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Adelabu stated that his decision is predicated on the necessity to focus on his long-standing gubernatorial aspirations in Oyo State.
The exit marks another significant departure from the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration as the 2027 political cycle begins to influence cabinet stability.
In the formal resignation letter (referenced FMP/HM/SGF/026/I/001), Adelabu underscored that his political trajectory has been geared toward the leadership of Oyo State since 2016.
He reminded the President that his previous resignation as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2018 was also in pursuit of this specific objective.
By stepping down now, the Minister aims to eliminate potential conflicts of interest and ensure a focused campaign for the Agodi Government House.
The outgoing Minister expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for the "honour and privilege" of leading the Ministry of Power, a sector he described as the linchpin of Nigeria’s industrialization and economic transformation.
Adelabu noted that the timing of his departure is intended to facilitate a "smooth handover of responsibilities," ensuring that the administration's recent milestones in grid stabilization and the ₦3.3 trillion debt settlement plan remain on course.
Following the 2023 elections, where he contested under the Accord Party before returning to the All Progressives Congress (APC), his latest move suggests an attempt to unify the APC structure in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 polls.
Under the current legal framework of the Electoral Act 2026, political appointees seeking elective office are required to vacate their positions within a specific window.
